'CIA AGENT' PATEK GOES ON TRIAL

Umar Patek , or his double, greets prosecutors at a court in Jakarta. Patek is alleged to work for the CIA and is alleged to have helped build the bombs used in the 2002 Bali attacks.

The trial of 'Umar Patek', alleged Bali bomber, began on 13 February 2012.

He has been indicted for his alleged role in a series of coordinated bomb attacks on churches across Indonesia during Christmas Eve 2000, and for concealing information about a militant training camp that was uncovered in Aceh in early 2010.

The Indonesian security services have allegedly been infiltrated by Mossad and the CIA.

Patek was captured in January 2011, in Abbottabad, by the Pakistan authorities.

Abbottabad is alleged to have contained a number if CIA safe houses.

The CIA claimed that Osama bin laden lived in Abbottabad.

ISI claims credit for arrest of Bali bomb suspect

Umar Patek is a member of the "CIA-linked" militant group Jemaah Islamiyah and he is believed to have been involved in the 2002 Bali bombing.

The Pakistan inteligence service ISI claims that it was responsible for the arrest of Patek.

According to an ISI officer: "We captured him a few days ago and now ... will ensure that he is taken back to Indonesia."

When asked if it was a joint effort by several intelligence organisations that resulted in the arrest, the officer said: "No, it was entirely the efforts of the ISI."

Patek is a 35-year-old Javanese Arab.

Reportedly he was trained at CIA-Al-Qaeda camps in Afghanistan in the 1990s.

Patek was reportedly killed on 14 September 2006 in the Sulu province of the Philippines. But this report was never confirmed.

In The Age, (We must not get back in bed with Kopassus - theage.com.au), Dr Damien Kingsbury wrote about Moslem militants in Indonesia and their links to the Indonesian military.

Komando Jihad, which became Jemaah Islamiah - was set up by (American trained) Indonesian generals.

Dr Kingsbury wrote: "Kopassus (Indonesian special forces) ...set up the Islamic organisation Komando Jihad ... which has since emerged as Jemaah Islamiah."

What about the 2002 Bali Bomb?

Bali bomb 'mastermind' Al Faruq - 'worked for the CIA.'

Former Indonesian State Intelligence Coordinating Board (BAKIN) chief A.C. Manulang was quoted by Tempo magazine as suggesting that Al-Faruq was a CIA-recruited agent.

Kuwaiti citizen Omar Al Faruq was arrested in Bogor on June 5, 2002 and handed over to US authorities.

Al Faruq was then able to escape from custody.

According to a news story in the Sydney Morning Herald, November 2, 2002:

"Some time around the 30 October 2002, senior officers in the Indonesian military HQ gave a piece of information to a military attache from a Western embassy in Indonesia -the source of explosive used in the October 12 bombing in Bali was the head of the counter-terrorism unit with the army's special forces."

The father-in-law of the officer concerned is Hendropriyono, Indonesia's former spy chief.

The airline manifest of Garuda airlines shows that at least two generals from Jakarta visited Bali three days before the bombings and that they returned to Jakarta one day before the Sari Club was blown up.

This was confirmed by armed forces chief General Sutarto, who claimed that General Djaja Suparman was on vacation, while General Ryamizard Riyacudu, chief of staff, was said to have gone to Bali for health reasons. (Jakarta Post)

19 people were killed and scores injured in a series of attacks on churches on Christmas Eve in 2000.

Umar Patek is accused of being involved in these church bombings.

In February 2001, the respected Indonesian newsweekly Tempo published a cover story suggesting links between the church bombings and the Indonesian military, the TNI.

The article pointed out that Edi Sugiarto, who was quickly arrested and confessed to assembling 15 of the bombs used in the town of Medan, has long run a car repair shop in the province of Aceh, where a separatist group named GAM operated.

Members of TNI and Indonesia’s special forces, Kopassus, regularly went to his shop for repairs and just to hang out.

As a result, GAM claimed he was a TNI lackey and burned down his shop and house in 1997.

Phone records also indicated that Sugiarto called Fauzi Hasbi seven times before the bombings.

Hasbi is a leader of Jemaah Islamiyah, but Tempo outed him as an Indonesian government agent.

In 2005, two years after Hasbi’s death, the Australian television program SBS Dateline provided additional evidence of Hasbi’s long-time links to the TNI.

Fasbi also called Jacob Tanwijaya, a businessman well connected with the TNI, 35 times.

Over the Christmas period, in Indonesia, millions of Moslems will be protecting both Christians and churches.

H.M. Nuruzzaman, of the world's biggest Moslem organisation, Nahdlatul Ulama, said a total of 2.6 million Moslems have been prepared for the deployment.

While in hospital, she claims, he was brutally beaten and sexually assaulted.

She found him with his legs chained to the bed and severe injuries to his genitals.

In the same hospital she found another prisoner lying in the emergency ward, his body festering with worms and covered in excrement.

He had, she says, been there for a month.

Unemployment has soared.

Gulen lives in America and has been accused of having links to the CIA.

The Gulen movement "forms the apex of a huge conglomerate that includes NGOs, firms, newspapers and college dormitories in Turkey, plus schools across the world."

Several journalists who have tried probing Gulen have found themselves prosecuted or jailed.

In 1947, Dutch troops massacred 431 men and boys in the town of Rawagede, east of Jakarta, in Indonesia.

Indonesia remembers bloody Dutch massacre

In 2008, eight widows and one survivor took the Dutch state to court.

A Dutch court has now ruled that the Netherlands was responsible for the executions, and that seven of the eight widows and the family of the survivor should be compensated.

The executions in Rawagede took place at a time when the Indonesians were seeking their independence from the Dutch.

RAFFLES' RAPE OF JAVA

Sir Stamford Raffles, of the East India Company, brought death and destruction to Java in Indonesia.

He sacked and looted cities.

He supported slavery.

He promoted the trade in Opium.

He bankrupted Javanese farmers.

He was a bit of a fascist.

Tim Hannigan (Words and Images), at History Today, has written "When Raffles Ran Java." (When Raffles Ran Java History Today ).

Hannigan points out that the official version of the British takeover of Java is less than accurate.

Raffles invaded Java in 1811.

He provoked trouble with the leading Javanese sultan.

He then sacked and looted Yogyakarta.

The courtiers of the exiled Sultan were forced to kiss Raffles's knees.

Raffles continued the practice of slavery in Java.

Raffles demanded money from Java's farmers.

The result was that farmers got heavily into debt and had to turn to money lenders.

While raffles was in charge, British opium barons moved in and opium use took off.

In 1813, Raffles was in trouble, being accused of corruption.

Raffles was sacked and left Java in 1815.

In Bogor, in Java, there is a monument in memory of Raffle's wife, Olivia, who died of a tropical disease in 1814.

The beautiful Olivia was rumoured to have had an affair, prior to the marriage, with one of Raffles' superiors, a man called Ramsay.

Four of Raffles' five children died in Sumatra of tropical diseases.

"I wholeheartedly agree that sharia law should be implemented in Indonesia," Didit told AFP.

In 2010, Germany's Goethe-Institut carried out a survey of the nearly 1,500 Indonesian Muslims aged 15 to 25 years.

68% supported whipping for alcohol consumption.

90% disagreeing with interfaith marriage.

On 9 June 2011, in Situbondo in Indonesia, Aprilia was abducted by three men after leaving a church service.

She was found battered, but alive, hundreds of kilometres away.

She managed to get home after local farmers gave her some money for her bus-fare.

In 2011, there have been around two dozen attacks on churches in Indonesia, mostly on the main island of Java.

"Once inside, Aprilia managed to send a text message to her mother and two dorm friends that she had been kidnapped...

"Aprilia claimed she had been bound and blindfolded inside the car, then brought to an empty house where she was beaten and slashed repeatedly, before being dumped in the middle of a cornfield."

The Situbondo Police chief of detectives said Aprilia’s story was inconsistent and full of holes.

"Like the fact she was able to text her mother and her friends after she was kidnapped," he said.

"How did she do that? Why would the kidnappers allow her to do that?"

Sunarto also said her family had refused to let her be questioned by police. "How can we trust her if we’re not allowed to speak to her on the pretext that she’s still in shock?" he said.

He said there seemed to be no motive for abducting her, given that no ransom demand was made and they barely said a word to Aprilia.

In late 1998, black-clad ninjas murdered hundreds of innocent people in East Java, in Indonesia.

Bloody decapitated heads were paraded around the streets.

Reportedly, the killings were part of a psychological terror campaign ( like that waged in 1965 by the US-advised Indonesian Army, when at least 500,000 civilians were killed.)

In 1998, as in 1965, there was the distribution of death lists to terrify the public, the arrival of assassins in trucks, mutilation of corpses and display of body parts in public places.

Some observers believed that a faction of the US-trained army was fomenting terror to justify a military crackdown.

Army members were arrested by local authorities for the killings, and then mysteriously released.

Pro-democracy activists in Jakarta pointed out that'Ninja' is the term popularly used to designate the Army Special Forces (Kopassus) in disguise.

"The U.S.-trained Kopassus Special Forces were the preferred assets of the CIA and Pentagon."

From this we learn:

1. Jews were probably living in Indonesia well before the European expansion into Southeast Asia.

A Jewish merchant from Egypt died in Sumatra in 1290.

2. When the Portuguese and Spanish began their voyages of exploration, Jewish converts to Christianity and some non-Iberian Jews were involved.

3. By 1619, the Dutch had taken Jakarta from the Portuguese.

A number of Jews, hiding their identity, were living in the Dutch East Indies as early as the eighteenth century.

Leendert Miero (1755-1834), who was born in present-day Ukraine, became the wealthy owner of a large estate at Pondok Gede near Batavia.

Miero revealed that he was Jewish when the Dutch agreed to allow Jews in Indonesia in 1782.

Jacob Saphir (1822-1886), a Jew of Romanian descent, reported the existence of Jews in Jakarta, Surabaya and Semarang.

He reported that the Jews in Jakarta were wealthy merchants, government officials and soldiers.

Some married local Indonesians.

Most Jews 'concealed or denied their Jewish origins'.

4. In the 1920s, the Jewish community set up the Association for Jewish Interests in the Dutch East Indies and a number of other Jewish organisations.

A monthly magazine called Erets Israel was issued in Padang.

In 1926, a number of Jews in Surabaya and Padang set up the Dutch Indies Zionist Association.

In 1928, the central fundraising organisation for Zionist settlement in Israel began to operate in Indonesia.

The fund opened branches in many cities, including Jakarta, Bandung, Malang, Medan, Padang, Semarang and Yogyakarta.

In the pre-war years many Jews lived in large houses and they usually employed native maids, cooks and chauffeurs.

A few Jewish men married local women.

The 'Baghdadi Jews' lived mainly in Surabaya and some of them were involved in drug trafficking.

Top Indonesian businessman Aburizal Bakrie has made a deal with the Rothschilds, a deal which is about dominance in Indonesia's booming coal sector.

The Bakrie Group has done a deal with Vallar, the mining investment fund set up by by Nat Rothschild.

Bakrie will have majority control of Vallar and rename it Bumi Plc.

"We’ve announced the creation of an Indonesian coal champion ... (that) is going to be the largest supplier of thermal coal to China," Nat Rothschild said.

In May 2011, the Chinese Defence Minister has been visiting Indonesia, the Philippines and Singapore.

Indonesian Vice President Boediono met with visiting Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie in Jakarta on 21 May 2011.

"Boediono said that the bilateral relations between Indonesia and China have grown rapidly since the two countries established a strategic partnership...

On 31 March 2011, we learn of the arrest in Pakistan of Umar Patek, who is suspected of working for the CIA.

ISI claims credit for arrest of Bali bomb suspect

Umar Patek is a member of "CIA-linked" militant group Jemaah Islamiyah and he is believed to have been involved in the 2002 Bali bombing.

The Pakistan inteligence service ISI claims that it was responsible for the arrest of Patek.

According to an ISI officer: "We captured him a few days ago and now ... will ensure that he is taken back to Indonesia."

When asked if it was a joint effort by several intelligence organisations that resulted in the arrest, the officer said: "No, it was entirely the efforts of the ISI."

Patek is a 35-year-old Javanese Arab.

Reportedly he was trained at CIA-Al-Qaeda camps in Afghanistan in the 1990s.

Patek was reportedly killed on 14 September 2006 in the Sulu province of the Philippines. But this report was never confirmed.

In The Age, (We must not get back in bed with Kopassus - theage.com.au), Dr Damien Kingsbury wrote about Moslem militants in Indonesia and their links to the Indonesian military.

Komando Jihad, which became Jemaah Islamiah - was set up by (American trained) Indonesian generals.

Dr Kingsbury wrote: "Kopassus (Indonesian special forces) ...set up the Islamic organisation Komando Jihad ... which has since emerged as Jemaah Islamiah."

Bali bomb 'mastermind' Al Faruq - 'worked for the CIA.'

Former Indonesian State Intelligence Coordinating Board (BAKIN) chief A.C. Manulang was quoted by Tempo magazine as suggesting that Al-Faruq was a CIA-recruited agent.

Kuwaiti citizen Omar Al Faruq was arrested in Bogor on June 5, 2002 and handed over to US authorities.

Al Faruq was then able to escape from custody.

According to a news story in the Sydney Morning Herald, November 2, 2002:

"Some time around the 30 October 2002, senior officers in the Indonesian military HQ gave a piece of information to a military attache from a Western embassy in Indonesia -the source of explosive used in the October 12 bombing in Bali was the head of the counter-terrorism unit with the army's special forces."

The father-in-law of the officer concerned is Hendropriyono, Indonesia's former spy chief.

The airline manifest of Garuda airlines shows that at least two generals from Jakarta visited Bali three days before the bombings and that they returned to Jakarta one day before the Sari Club was blown up.

This was confirmed by armed forces chief General Sutarto, who claimed that General Djaja Suparman was on vacation, while General Ryamizard Riyacudu, chief of staff, was said to have gone to Bali for health reasons. (Jakarta Post)

"Bogor police have been combing ...the concert locations."

Justin Bieber arrives in Jakarta.

In Indonesia, there have been a number of recent bomb threats and the discovery of explosives intended to blow up a church on Good Friday, the day before Justin Bieber's concert.

"Police have arrested a cameraman from Indonesian television station Global TV who was allegedly recruited to film the foiled Good Friday bomb attack on the outskirts of Jakarta.

“He was arrested at Jakarta on Friday,” Boy told the Jakarta Globe on Saturday.

"He said P had also asked IF to invite foreign cameramen to film the explosions, saying he 'wanted the blast to be broadcast internationally.'...

"P, one of 20 people detained in connection with the bomb plots, has been identified as the husband of Deni Karmelita, a civil servant working at the National Narcotics Agency (BNN)."

Indonesia is the world's biggest 'Moslem' country and is of great strategic importance.

Taufik is believed to have profited from various big infrastructure projects.

Taufik is now speaker of Indonesia's parliament.

5. Yudhoyono's former vice-president, Jusuf Kalla, paid "enormous bribes" to win the chairmanship of Golkar, Indonesia's largest political party.

6. Yudhoyono got cabinet secretary Sudi Silalahi to "intimidate" at least one judge in a 2006 court case arising from a fight for control of former president Abdurahman Wahid's National Awakening Party (PKB).

7. Yudhoyono has used the Indonesian State Intelligence Agency (BIN) to spy on both his allies and opponents.

He got the intelligence service to report on Golkar presidential candidate General Wiranto.

At a meeting of Yudhoyono's cabinet, BIN chief Syamsir described Wiranto as a "terrorist mastermind."

8. Yudhoyono has links to Chinese-Indonesian businessmen, especially Tomy Winata, an alleged underworld figure and member of the "Gang of Nine" or "Nine Dragons," a leading gambling syndicate.

In 2006, Agung Laksono, now Yudhoyono's Co-ordinating Minister for People's Welfare, told US embassy officers that TB Silalahi "functioned as a middleman, relaying funds from Winata to Yudhoyono."

Tomy Winata reportedly used the entrepreneur Muhammad Lutfi to give money to Yudhoyono.

Yudhoyono appointed Lutfi chairman of Indonesia's Investment Co-ordinating Board.

Senior State Intelligence Agency official Yahya Asagaf also told the US embassy Tomy Winata was trying to cultivate influence by using a senior presidential aide as his link to the president's wife, Kristiani Herawati.

9. In 2006, one presidential staff member told US embassy officers that Kristiani's family members were "specifically targeting financial opportunities related to state-owned enterprises."

The President was "witting of these efforts, which his closest operators (e.g. Sudi Silalahi) would advance, while Yudhoyono himself maintained sufficient distance that he could not be implicated."

The president's wife is "the president's undisputed top adviser."

"Members of the President's staff increasingly feel marginalised and powerless to provide counsel to the President."

Yahya Asagaf of the State Intelligence Agency said the first lady's opinion is "the only one that matters."

10. "Ten years of political and economic reform have made Indonesia democratic, stable, and increasingly confident about its leadership role in south-east Asia and the Muslim world.

"Indonesia has held successful, free and fair elections; has weathered the global financial crisis; and is tackling internal security threats."

But, a series of political scandals in 2009 and 2010 seriously damaged Yudhoyono's political standing.

Yudhoyono was increasingly "paralyzed" as his popularity diminished.

"Unwilling to risk alienating segments of the parliament, media, bureaucracy and civil society, Yudhoyono has slowed reforms. He is also unwilling to cross any constituencies ...

"Until he is satisfied that he has shored up his political position, Yudhoyono is unlikely to spend any political capital to move his reform agenda, or controversial aspects of US -Indonesia relations, forward."

A photographer took pictures of Arifanto gazing at porn.

Most Indonesian Moslems are moderate and liberal.

But, reportedly, the Saudis have been pouring money into the CIA-linked extremists.

The extremists have pushed through several nut-case laws, including the pornography law.

Indonesians can be jailed for up to 15 years, or fined, for kissing in public, exposure of a woman's bits and pieces or displaying erotic art.

In January 2011, the anti-porn law was used to jail Nazril 'Ariel' Irham, lead singer of Indonesia's most popular band Peterpan, after two home-made sex tapes appeared on the internet.

In 1998, there was the possibility that Indonesia would change its government and become a democracy like Malaysia, where there is no miserable poverty.

Unfortunately, Indonesia's American-trained military hijacked the 1998 protest movement.

The May 1998 riots which toppled Suharto were organised by the military; certain Chinese people were made the scapegoats for all of Indonesia's problems; most of the old elite, consisting of generals, Chinese-Indonesian businessmen, religious leaders and politicians, remained in power; certain factions within the elite lost out.

Now sections of the elite are using Islam to frustrate democracy.

Why might the CIA be helping the PKS?

A Saudi-style Indonesia will have no love for China, and may side with the USA in countering it.

An independent-minded democratic Indonesia might not side with the USA.

Let's look at what's been happening in the world's biggest Moslem country, Indonesia, since its 'People Power' revolution in 1998.

On 8 February 2011, "there were reports of vandalism and firebombing of Catholic schools and churches in Central Java ... suspected to be the work of the Islamic Defenders Front." (Indonesia is no longer a poster child for pluralism)

On 8 February 2011, a "mob of 1,500 Muslims went on the rampage in the central Javanese town of Temanggung.

"This time they were angry about a court verdict given to a Catholic man accused of blaspheming Islam.

"He got the maximum sentence, but this apparently was not enough for the protesters, who burned three churches to the ground." (Indonesia and its place in the world: Feet of clay)

On 6 February 2011, in West Java, three members of a Moslem sect were beaten to death by members of the Islamic Defenders Front, a group reportedly linked to elements of the police.

"Footage of the bloody attack in Banten on 6 February showed police officers providing an embarrassingly feeble match for a crowd of 1,500 villagers, equipped with machetes, rocks and bamboo sticks."

Indonesia's current problems with 'religion' may be related to factions within the all-powerful military.

One faction may be trying to destabilise the government.

3. The military is still the power behind the scenes.

The country is still corrupt.

Back in 1998 there were hopes of CHANGE.

The Moslem cleric Abdurrahman Wahid became president of Indonesia in 1999.

He promoted free speech and human rights, defended British author Salman Rushdie and visited East Timor to apologize for human rights abuses committed by Indonesian forces during their American backed occupation.

Wahid knew that the Moslem militants were linked to the American trained military. Fundamentalist Islam is a tool to keep the rich elite in power.

Back in the 1960s, the CIA had arranged for the Indonesian military to be put into power in Indonesia.

When he became President, Wahid sought to reform the military and end the control of Indonesian institutions by the American trained generals.

Wahid found an ally in Agus Wirahadikusumah who was made Commander of the powerful Kostrad regiment.

Agus began uncovering a financial scandal linked to Kostrad.

Agus then died rather suddenly!

The military wanted Wahid removed from the presidency and began to stir up trouble.

In the year 2000, there was trouble in part of Indonesia called Maluku.

The Indonesian military set up a Moslem militia called Laskar Jihad (similar to the CIA's al Qaeda)

Laskar Jihad was transported to Maluku by the military.

Wahid had ordered the military to block Laskar Jihad from going to Maluku[40]

Laskar Jihad were being financed by Fuad Bawazier, the last Minister of Finance to have served under Suharto.

Most Moslems are hospitable and moderate. The fundamentalists are promoted by the CIA as a way of keeping Moslems weak.

There was trouble in West Papua.

Wahid wanted to follow a policy of moderation. This was opposed by the military and its alleged puppets, such as Megawati, in other political parties.

On 24 December 2000, there were attacks directed against churches in Jakarta and in eight cities across Indonesia.

It is suspected that the American trained Indonesian military were behind the attacks.

Wahid was forced out of office.

Wahid discussed his suspicions regarding the involvement of the Indonesian police and military in the Bali Bombings, in an interview in the documentary Inside Indonesia's War on Terrorism which was aired by SBS Dateline on October 12, 2005.

The article pointed out that Edi Sugiarto, who was quickly arrested and confessed to assembling 15 of the bombs used in the town of Medan, has long run a car repair shop in the province of Aceh, where a separatist group named GAM has been fighting for many years.

Members of TNI and Indonesia’s special forces, Kopassus, regularly went to his shop for repairs and just to hang out.

As a result, GAM claimed he was a TNI lackey and burned down his shop and house in 1997.

Phone records also indicated that Sugiarto called Fauzi Hasbi seven times before the bombings.

Hasbi is a leader of JI, but Tempo outed him as an Indonesian government mole.

In 2005, two years after Hasbi’s death, the Australian television program SBS Dateline provided additional evidence of Hasbi’s long-time links to the TNI.

Fasbi also called Jacob Tanwijaya, a businessman well connected with the TNI, 35 times.

1. Around 2007, the U.S. diplomatic mission in Cairo identified dissident youth leaders and started a dialogue.

Dissident Egyptian youth were brought to the U.S. for ‘training’.

This was done through Freedom House and the National Endowment for Democracy which are known to have ties to the CIA.

2. Under the auspices of Freedom House, Egyptian dissidents were received in May 2008 by Condoleezza Rice at the State Department.

They also met White House National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley.

This Egyptian delegation was described by Condoleezza Rice as "The Hope for the Future of Egypt".

In May 2009, Hillary Clinton met a delegation of Egyptian dissidents, several of whom had met Condoleezza Rice a year earlier. These high level meetings were held a week prior to Obama's visit to Egypt.

The 16 activists met with Clinton and Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman in Washington at the end of a two-month fellowship organized by Freedom House’s New Generation program.

One trip was to Bali, where Tambunan, disguised in a wig and glasses, was exposed by a press photographer.

Among the officials he was convicted of bribing was a judge who acquitted him of corruption in 2010.

Tambunan's lawyer said his client was the “lowest in the chain of hierarchy”.

Many of the rich people manage to avoid paying taxes.

In South Korea, bribes are paid by business leaders to a president's campaign fund.

At Inside Indonesia 92, Apr-Jun 2008, Ari Kuncoro, who lectures in economics at the University of Indonesia and who has a PhD from Brown University USA, wrote 'Corruption Inc'

He makes the following points:

1. Economists Shleifer and Vishny, in 1993, distinguished between centralised and decentralised bribery.

Decentralised bribery is worse for economic growth than centralised bribery.

2. In Suharto's Indonesia, corruption was centralised and predictable.

Corruption was controlled by the Suharto family and the top military leadership, in partnership with the big businesses run by the Chinese-Indonesians.

3. In 2001, after the fall of Suharto, Indonesia had a decentralisation program.

More power was given to the regions.

Today, a lot more people are demanding bribes - including local politicians, officials, soldiers and police.

4. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono made tackling corruption his central campaign promise.

But, the judicial system and the civil service remain somewhat corrupt.

"The scandalous acquittal by the South Jakarta court of former Bank Mandiri director E. C. W. Neloe ... is just one example."

In 2006, a bribery scandal involved the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Bagir Manan.

5. There have been successes.

For example, in 2006, former Minister of Religion Said Agil Husein al-Munawar was jailed for seven years for corruptly using Mecca pilgrimage money.

Several former or current directors of state enterprises are now also in court or jail.

6. At a lower level, anti-corruption prosecutions are having some effect.

7. In provincial governor elections in West Java and North Sumatra, 'evidently corrupt and inept incumbents' were soundly defeated.

8. In 2008 it was revealed that the central Bank of Indonesia paid large bribes to national parliamentarians debating a new finance bill.

While the deputy governor of the bank was detained, catching 'the big fish' in parliament proved to be more difficult.

President Yudhoyono publicly disapproved of the anti corruption body's method of 'sting' operations.

9. One big issue is political party funding.

Much of the parties' money is thought to come from corrupt government officials.

10. Lawmaker Al Amin Nasution was arrested in 2008 for receiving a bribe from Riau Islands provincial officials in return for persuading the Ministry of Forestry to change the status of some land sites in Bintan Island.

Many Indonesians believe the arrests so far have only exposed the tip of an iceberg.

11. "As long as corruption in core national institutions of the state is addressed only half-heartedly, the prospects for substantial improvement remain dim...

"In order to succeed nationally, the anti-corruption drive must be accompanied by sweeping reforms in the judicial system and the civil service."

Human Rights Watch reports that the Indonesian government's plans for reform, isssued in October 2009, do not satisfy the requirement in a 2004 law that the government fully divest the armed forces of its business interests.

According to Lisa Misol, senior business and human rights researcher at Human Rights Watch, "The law says the government needs to get the military out of these businesses, but instead they will be allowed to remain in military hands. Promising to monitor them more closely simply isn't good enough."

Human Rights Watch, in a 2006 report, sated that "the military's businesses ventures have been a platform for extortion, violence, property seizures, and other crimes against civilians."

Official data from 2007 show that the military businesses had gross assets of Rp3.2 trillion (US$350 million) and earned a profit of Rp268 billion ($28.5 million) that year.

3. There is good news from Indonesia, and Americans and Europeans should take note.

The good news is about the power of the internet.

In Indonesia, leaked phone calls suggested that bad guys within the police and attorney-general's office conspired to bring down the anti-corruption commission by framing two of its officials.

Indonesians then started using Facebook, and various blogs, to demand the resignation of the allegedly corrupt national police chief and the allegedly corrupt attorney-general. (Financial Times, 12 January 2010: Indonesians take protests off the streets)

Enda Nasution, the father of Indonesia's blogging community, says: "It is about time people start protesting in (these) much more efficient, modern, intelligent ways."

After the two anti-corruption officials were 'framed' and arrested by police, more than one million people signed up for a page on Facebook supporting the anti-corruption men.

The media has given publicity to the bloggers and Facebook protestors.

President Yudhoyono was forced to appoint a special fact-finding team.

This team concluded that the case against the anti-corruption officials was fabricated.

In 2009, more than 60,000 Indonesian Facebook users joined a support page for a housewife jailed after complaining in an e-mail to friends about the medical treatment she received at a hospital near Jakarta.

The police were persuaded to release the housewife on bail. She was later acquitted by a court, but the attorney-general's office may decide to appeal.

Indonesia is expected soon to have 74 million internet users, and they are not as brainwashed as your average American.

4. Americans and Europeans can expect to suffer the same problems as Indonesia.

Americans, Europeans and Indonesians should use the power of the internet to counter injustice.

And the Facebook and Blog entries should not just be about issues which affect the middle classes.

It's time to fight for the poorest people in society, whether they are in Jakarta or New Orleans or Gaza.

WAHID - THE CLASSIC MOSLEM

The Moslem cleric Abdurrahman Wahid, also known as Gus Dur, headed the world's biggest Moslem organisation, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU).

Wahid also became president of the world's biggest Moslem country, Indonesia.

Wahid loved jazz, football, European and American movies, and democracy.

He worked as a journalist for the prestigious Tempo news magazine.

As Chairman of NU, Wahid was successful in increasing the quality of the pesantren (Moslem schools).

Wahid supported religious tolerance and moderate liberal ideas.

Wahid accepted an invitation to visit Israel in 1994.[19]

Wahid was president of Indonesia from 1999-2001.

He promoted free speech and human rights.

He defended British author Salman Rushdie.

He visited East Timor and apologized for human rights abuses committed by Indonesian forces during their American backed occupation.

Wahid knew that the Moslem militants were linked to the American trained military. Fundamentalist Islam is a tool to keep the rich elite in power.

Back in the 1960s, the CIA had arranged for the Indonesian military to be put into power in Indonesia.

When he became President, Wahid sought to reform the military and end the control of Indonesian institutions by the American trained generals.

Wahid found an ally in Agus Wirahadikusumah who was made Commander of the powerful Kostrad regiment.

Agus began uncovering a financial scandal linked to Kostrad.

Agus then died rather suddenly.

The military wanted Wahid removed from the presidency and began to stir up trouble.

Most Moslems are hospitable and moderate. The fundamentalists are promoted by the CIA as a way of keeping Moslems weak.

There was trouble in West Papua.

Wahid wanted to follow a policy of moderation. This was opposed by the military and its alleged puppets, such as Megawati, in other political parties.

On 24 December 2000, there were attacks directed against churches in Jakarta and in eight cities across Indonesia.

It is suspected that the American trained Indonesian military was behind the attacks.

Wahid was forced out of office.

Wahid discussed his suspicions regarding the involvement of the Indonesian government and military in the terrorist bombings on Bali, in an interview in the documentary Inside Indonesia's War on Terrorism which was aired by SBS Dateline on October 12, 2005.

Wahid was saying in 2005 of the Bali bombings: "The orders to do this or that came from within our armed forces... There is not a single Islamic group ... that is not controlled by (Indonesian) intelligence."

Indonesia's intelligence services are said to work closely with the CIA.

As a result, GAM claimed he was a TNI lackey and burned down his shop and house in 1997.

Phone records also indicated that Sugiarto called Fauzi Hasbi seven times before the bombings.

Hasbi is a leader of JI, but Tempo outed him as an Indonesian government mole.

In 2005, two years after Hasbi’s death, the Australian television program SBS Dateline provided additional evidence of Hasbi’s long-time links to the TNI.

Fasbi also called Jacob Tanwijaya, a businessman well connected with the TNI, 35 times.

The airline manifest of Garuda airlines shows that at least two generals from Jakarta visited Bali three days before the bombings and that they returned to Jakarta one day before the Sari Club was blown up. The CIA was following the example of British Intelligence and sought to use Islam to further its goals. They wanted to find a charismatic religious leader that they could promote and control and they began to cooperate with groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood. With the rise of Nasser the Brotherhood was also courted more seriously by the pro-Western Arab regimes of Saudi Arabia and Jordan. They needed all the popular support that they could muster against the rise of Nasser-inspired Arab nationalism to keep their regimes intact.

The Muslim Brotherhood was an obvious ally against Nasser, because he had abolished it from Egypt after it was involved in a failed assassination attempt on his life in 1954. The Brotherhood rejected Nasser's policy that, for the most part, kept religion out of politics. Officially the Brotherhood was an outlawed organization, but it remained influential and active within Egypt working against the secular regime, often hand-in-hand with British Intelligence. In June of 1955 MI6 was already approaching the Brotherhood in Syria to agitate against the new government that showed strong left-wing tendencies and a desire to merge with Egypt. The Brotherhood became an even more important asset after Nasser announced the Egyptian takeover of the Suez...

The police charged Antasari with arranging the gangland style assassination of a businessman.

Earlier in 2009, the KPK caught on a wiretap the country’s chief detective, Comr. Gen. Susno Duadji, phoning a businessman, Anggoro Widjojo, who was under investigation.
